THE HERESIES OF J. PRESTON EBY
1 Tim. 4:1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.
Timothy identifies several things for our following discussion:
(1) the time of this occurrance(in the latter times or latter days before Christ's return);
(2) who he is talking about(some who fall away from a prior knowledge of the truth); and
(3) the catalyst of this activity(deceitful or false spirits).
A SPECIAL NOTE: WE REGULARLY RECEIVE COMMENTS FROM INDIVIDUALS WHO DISPUTE THE INFORMATION PRESENTED BELOW. THE INFORMATION PRESENTED BELOW IS AVAILABLE IN THE OPEN ETHER FOR ANYONE WHO DESIRES TO FIND THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS INDIVIDUAL AND HIS VARIOUS ASSOCIATIONS AND BELIEFS.
SUCH CRITICS OF THE OPEN TRUTH TURN A BLIND EYE TO INDIVIDUALS SUCH AS EBY WHO BELIEVE(AND STATE AS MUCH) THAT MAN CAN BECOME AS GOD(MSOG, Latter Rain and Sonship Heresies which are not taught in the Bible).
Eby does not believe in a heaven as portrayed in the Bible - he is interested in creating a heavon on earth, much like the Reconstructionists hope to do. THE MSOG AND Reconstructionists have far more in common than is commonly recognized. He states in his writings that there is no Second Coming of Christ, that Bible Study is wrong..and the list goes on.
We are told in Timothy 3:16 that scripture is given for "correction" and "reproof" as well as "doctrine". We quote scripture below which clearly contradicts Eby's theology. It is not "un-Christian" to correct one who is in conflict with clear bible teaching. It is a command that we are to follow which is clearly different from saying that someone is a "fool", or "cheater" or worse. When we put on the whole armor of God, it is not only to protect us from Satanic influences but also to protect ourselves from those who profess to be Christian but have found "another gospel" and are promoting it to the unsuspecting world.
For those who do not believe that Eby is involved in the MSOG and Latter Rain heresies(which were rejected by the Assemblies of God liberal congregations many years ago) only need to research these two topics anywhere on the Internet to find what we have stated below is true and opposed to clear bible teaching on the end times and how man's relationship to God is to be understood prior to and following the Second Return of Jesus Christ.
J Preston Eby said:
"In 1948 -- the very year that Israel became a nation -- another great deluge fell from heaven, a mighty revival then called the 'Latter Rain.' In this Restoration Revival God did a work which far transcended the work started in the Pentecostal outpouring of more than 40 years before. All nine gifts of the Spirit, the five-fold ministries of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, spiritual praise and worship, and the end time revelation of God's purpose to manifest his sons, a glorious church, to bring in the kingdom of God, all of this and much more was restored among God's people." (The Battle of Armageddon, Part IV, J. Preston Eby, Kingdom Bible Studies, September 1976, pg. 10; quoted in Richard M. Riss, "The Latter Rain Movement of 1948 and the Mid-Twentieth Century Evangelical Awakening", pg. 197, April 1979.)
And, for those who read this memorandum who do not believe that Eby teaches the heresy that man in this world cannot become as God and perform tasks relegated to Christ alone need to read this:
(the Latter Rain movement is) " a people, being prepared for the coming THIRD OUTPOURING which shall finally bring the FULLNESS, a company of overcoming sons of God who have come to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ to actually dethrone Satan, casting him out of the heavenlies, and finally binding him in the earthlies, bringing the hope of deliverance and life to all the families of the earth. This third great work of the Spirit shall usher a people into full redemption--free from the curse, sin, sickness, death and carnality." J. Preston Eby - as quoted in Latter Rain by Richard Riss, (Mississauga, Ont:Honeycomb Visual Productions), 1987, pp. 80-81
This is not only heresy - but blasphemy as well - taking on the unique tasks of Christ and performing them by way of "later day apostles and prophets" who are presumed equivalent to Christ Himself!
Some background on J. Preston Eby
J. Preston Eby was born into a Mennonite family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. While still a toddler, he claims his parents received the "baptism in the Holy Spirit" through the witness of some Pentecostal followers in the area. Eby does not indicate that his parents accepted Christ as Saviour but presumably were "baptised in the spirit" simply by the "laying on of hands" as is the practice of the Pentacostal church.
In his twelfth year Eby claims he was filled with the Spirit – again, without any statement of faith. He further claims that in that same year the Holy Spirit sovereignly unfolded to his understanding the truth of "the reconciliation of all things" and "all men unto God" .
Interestingly, no one else around him, including his parents who supposedly had who received the same "spirit"– embraced this revelation; they were unable to understand or deal with this information. If such revelations were indeed from God, one would think no such problem should have existed.
Through those early years Eby kept this so-called "truth" to himself. Later he came into contact with a group known as the "Latter Rain" which had been expelled as heresy from the Pentacostal movement just prior to 1950.
The Latter Rain was a precursor to the current Charismatic movement with emphasis on the body of Christ, gifts of the Spirit, laying on of hands, impartation, five-fold ministry, prophetic ministry, spiritual worship, the kingdom of God, and going on to perfection, unto fullness of sonship to God, and the Manifest Sons of God(MSOG) heresy.
Many people today claim they have the divine authority and ability to "impart" the Holy Spirit, ministry gifts and callings into people's lives. Are they right? Can people bestow the Holy Spirit into another believer's life or is that an act that God initiates? Can people become prophets via impartation? Where did this belief and practice come from and who are the people making these claims? What sort of "manifestations" come by way of these impartations or spiritual experiences?
Critics of this article simply don't connect the dots between "manifestations" which come by way of the "impartations" which are part and parcel of the MSOG and Latter Rain heresies that Eby subtly promotes in his writings.
Eby claims The Lord pressed him into a deeper understanding of "sonship"(MSOG Theology) and the kingdom of God, already planted within him as a seed through the "visitation of the Lord" as Latter Rain.
Along the way he became associated with Gerald Derstine and The Gospel Crusade in Sarasota, Florida, serving as an associate minister with him for eight years, first co-pastoring and later pastoring the Revival Tabernacle in that city.
Eby fails to tell about the details of his association with Gerald Derstine's fraudulent "ministry" where for seven years Derstine and his ministerial staff(including Eby) duped his followers with sensational accounts of miracles, mass conversions and subsequent martyrdoms among Arab Muslims in Israel and the West Bank. Eby's supporters have no comeback for this period in his background.
Together with Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcast network, Derstine's supporters were solicited to contribute almost $3 million in one year alone, including $500,000 for the "First Church of the Martyrs," a structure which they claimed was a shelter for the widows and children of some 35 new believers violently killed for leaving Islam.(reference: Sara Diamond, Spiritual Warfare: The Politics of the Christian Right (Boston, MA: South End Press, 1989).
Derstine's regional ministry leader now acknowledges that there were no such martyrs and no sincere Muslim converts associated with the ministry. The reports were all fabricated.
In one pamphlet published by Gospel Crusade, Mohammed Rawidan, the ministry's first "convert" claimed that the body of a martyred infant turned into dust in his hands, and then into a large, white bird, which flew to heaven. A copy of the infant's death certificate showed she had died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and was buried normally.
In the light of these and other fraudulent revelations, Gospel Crusade suspended two top officials and withdrew from circulation literature, videotapes and the religious best-seller, "Fire Over Israel."
Evangelical leaders in Israel repeatedly warned Derstine that the reports were false, but Derstine said he published the reports
"without any inkling it was (all) a lie."
According to Phil Derstine, son of the founder and Gospel Crusade president, an "accountability procedure" is being put into place. But Gerald Derstine still claims that spiritual discernment, not intellectual discernment is the qualification for judging his ministry.
Not to be able to discern, in seven years, that the accounts of these miracles were indeed false, is not a sign of a Christian walk or conversion; God gives the true Christian spiritual discernment to be able to rightly divide the word as well as clearly identify falsehoods and misleading doctrine. To continue in such a deluded condition is indeed an indication that the ministry in question is not on track with bible doctrine.
Eby of course fails to mention any of this in his "testimony" and ministerial background writeups.
For Eby, if he claimed such "spiritual discernment"( 1 Corinthians 12:8-11), if and when he received the Holy Spirit as he claimed, it is strange that God would have led him into a fraudulent minstry such as Gospel Crusade---and for eight(8) years at that!
Conclusion: Eby's "conversion" and reception of "the spirit", including spiritual discernment, were likely paranormal and received from a source other than God.
We are told to:
"...believe not every spirt, but test(try) the spirits whether they are of God; because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1.
Eby obviously did not do any checking up or testing the spirit of Gospel Crusade. God is not the author of confusion and is not in the business of misleading individuals who are sincere in their desire to serve Him. Eby obviously was not communicating with God.
In 1976 Eby went into a full-time writing ministry directed to those who he claims are "called and chosen as "elect of God" to grow up into the full stature of Jesus Christ as sons of God". This is the Manifest Sons of God(MSOG) heresy which is spreading rapidly throughout much of the Charismatic movement, including the late John Wimbler's Vineyard church.
The anti-semitic MSOG movement that Eby claims to govern his ministry incorrectly and boldly appropriates the title "elect" from that of the remnant of Israel described during the Tribulation's Time of Jacob's Trouble, and applies it to themselves in true Replacement Theology fashion.
Eby's writing ministry includes a monthly message titled KINGDOM BIBLE STUDIES as well as a number of booklets on various subjects. We discuss this subject below.
AN OVERVIEW OF THE FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD WAVE
The reason we review Eby's writings here is to alert the public to his multiple deviations from orthodox Christian teachings. Again and again, he relies on special revelations(from God, he presumes) regarding a wide range of subjects, including the establishment of the prideful and man-oriented Kingdom Now or Dominionism theologies which are infecting many mainstream Protestant and Evangelical churches.
The Latter Rain or First Wave movement of the late 40's that grabbed Eby and that has held him spiritually captive these many years had given birth to numerous other sub-teachings. The Manifest Sons of God(MSOG) was divided into two major sects. The Walk, and the Body of Christ. The Walk came out of the Latter Rain Movement under the “apostleship” of John Robert Stevens, who, like the self-addmitted alcoholic and practicing homesexual Paul Cain and others was a William Branham disciple. His was the Church of the Living Word in Redondo Beach, California.
Starting with the Latter Rain as his "baseline" theology, Stevens' activities eventually degenerated into what one would call "white witchcraft"; spiritualism, the reading of auras, astral projection, psychic warfare, hypnosis and such. Hardly the types of things that one who was supposedly indwelt by the Spirit of God would engage in.
Some of the other modern day, self-described "apostles" and "prophets" which you may recognize and which are responsible for the development of the MSOG/Latter Rain movements(First Wave) as well as subsequent post WWII Charismatic movements(Second Wave) which incorporate these original teachings and have progressed to the Signs and Wonders Movements(Third Wave) include Kenneth Hagin, Bill Britton, Kenneth Copeland, Jerry Savelle, Jesse Duplantis, Norval Hayes, Paul Cain(as noted above), Frank Hammond, Bernard Jordan, Rick Joyner, Oral Roberts, T.L. Osborn, Bob Jones of the Vineyard Church*, Alan Vincent, Turnel Nelson, Jefferson Edwards, Earl Paulk, Benson Idahosak, Benny Hinn, John Wimbler(deceased), Meheh Chavada, Victor Hafichuk, Morris Cerello, Rodney Howard Browne, Randy Clark and John Arnott.
One of the most common traits found amongst many of the above Latter Rain/MSOG teachers is that they often seem to have an aversion to being categorized as "Latter Rain", or of being identified with others in the movement.
Others, like Victor Hafichuk, are very coy, not wanting people to know exactly "where they are coming from" and probably happy for all the welter of opinions and individuals involved...for it allows them to hide and be all over the map at the same time.
Specifically, the MSOG doctrine has an eschatology of Dominionism through the "perfecting of the saints" under the leadership guidance of so-called "latter-day prophets and apostles". This heretical theology is sometimes difficult to distinguish from the worldview of Reconstructionism and its Preterist view of eschatology.
It is important to understand that the Charismatic Dominionism expressed in spiritual warfare and the current signs and wonders(Third Wave) movement characteristic of much of the Charismatic movement is largely an extension of the Manifest Sons of God doctrine.
Manifest Sons teachings are Kingdom Dominionist: they believe in restoration of the Church, restoration of the 5 fold ministry with the offices of apostles and prophets, having authority through its leaders by strong shepherding and discipleship.
These features are precisely what Eby encountered in his spiritual wanderings with the Latter Rain movement early in his career. His writings(below) reflect those claims of the Latter Rain movement that include a perfection of the saints, immortalization, and the attainment of "being Christ as we become just like Christ" in nature and ability.
Remember, the purpose of the Latter Rain movement(First Wave) transitioning to the Second Wave(Charismatics) was the opportunity to create a paradigm shift in the Church away from theology to "experience" to prepare the church to receive the revelatory leadership of the coming "Apostles" and "Prophets".
This is happening faster than one can imagine and is rapidly forming the core of the Last Days Apostate Church which will readily accept the Signs and Wonders of the False Prophet of the Tribulation period as divine. After all, when one is grilled and trained in this type of spiritual oven, it will be virtually a seamless transition to the activities of the False Prophet. Eby does not believe in the coming of an anti-christ as described in Daniel and Revelation so he has immunized himself from many of the eschatological truths which the Church accepts and looks forward to.
The following writings by Eby are definitely not what you want to show to your children if they have been brought up in a bible-believing, Evangelical Christian home. Much of what is discussed by Eby in the topics listed below bears considerable similarity to what the New Age movement has foisted on young people, encouraging self-aggrandization together with a spiritualization or allegorization of many key portions of Scripture which is necessary to conform to the MSOG heresy.
Try not to be disturbed by Eby's ramblings in these several writings. He cannot seem to focus on the essence of the topic without grandstanding or incoherently minstrating about the issue. By that time, the issue is muddied and clouded for the reader and subject to human reasoning rather than scriptural truth.
*Bob Jones: One of the Kansas City Prophets. Seen by some as the most controversial of the Kansas City Prophets. Was removed from the Vineyard Anaheim because of sexual improprieties, which consisted of encouraging women to undress in his office so they could stand "naked before the Lord" in order to receive a "word."
AN ANALYSIS OF J. PRESTON EBY'S KINGDOM BIBLE STUDIES
From the Candlestick to the Throne
The Kingdom of God
Why do men play with the Word of God? Why do they twist, change, mix-quote, mix-represent, and distort the good news of the Kingdom? Is it not the incredible darkness of the carnal mind and the ignorant foolishness of religion? I tell you today that the gospel of the Kingdom of God has absolutely nothing to do with dying and going to heaven—it has everything to do with the rule of God coming into this earth.
Redemption is not a change of location—it is a transformation of the state of being. The Father's desire is not that we leave the world behind someday to "fly away" to our mansion in the sky. His desire is for us to leave the world behind right now and press forward each day deeper and deeper into the depths of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.
"...My Kingdom is not of this world..." John 18:36
Once again, Eby subtly twists scripture to make it conform to the MSOG heresy of an elect set of humans being gradually morphed into spiritual perfection, ruling the earth as if they were Christ.
"The gospel of the Kingdom is not the good news that we shall go to some far-off heaven somewhere and live forever in an external paradise. As extraordinarily marvelous as that would be, God has something for us far, far better than this! Going to a place called heaven is not what Jesus had in mind when He proclaimed the Kingdom of Heaven.
The religious tradition concerning "going to heaven" is so strong that it distorts people's ability to perceive and understand what is written in the Word of God. When we emphasize the concept of going to heaven to live forever, the gospel of the Kingdom becomes incoherent. Preachers are always making the foolish statement, "Except a man be born again he cannot get to heaven."
THAT'S NOT WHAT JESUS SAID! It is an absurd perversion of the word of our Lord. Jesus wasn't talking about going anywhere—He plainly said that unless a man is born again by the Spirit of God he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God."
By comparison, when Jesus was preparing to go to the Cross and subsequently go into heaven, he said:
"In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may be also." John 14: 2-3.
This dichotomy above clearly illustrates how far Eby has strayed from the truth, allowing other spirits to delude him and others in the MSOG and Latter Rain movements.
It's Eby's word versus those of Jesus himself. Choose ye this day who ye will serve!
To Be The Lord's Prayer
The Heavens Declare
Eby believes that the twelve signs of the Zodiac depict God's plan and process of redemption. You be the judge!
1. VIRGO, the Virgin: A young woman bearing a branch in her right hand and an ear of corn in her left. The "seed" of the woman is to bring the Saviour. Christ (spirit) birthed out of the virgin soul. The sons of God brought forth from the sun-clad woman, the virgin bride of Christ. As Mary brought forth her first-born Son while still a virgin, so the virgin bride brings forth the manchild company before her ultimate consummation of marriage.
2. LIBRA, the Scales: the figure of a pair of balances, with one side up and the other down, as in the act of weighing. All creation is deficient, lowered, subjected to vanity, lacking a little from Elohim. The ministry of reconciliation restores all things into balance (harmony, oneness) in Christ.
3. SCORPIO, the Scorpion: the figure of a gigantic, poisonous, and deadly insect, with its tail and sting uplifted in anger, as if striking. The sting of sin and death via the carnal mind that infects every man.
4. SAGITTARIUS, the Archer: the figure of a horse with the head of a man with a drawn bow and arrow pointed at the Scorpion. Christ coming into the life as Warrior, conquering and to conquer. The commencement of the process of overcoming.
5. CAPRICORNUS, the Goat: the figure of a goat sinking down in death, with the hinder part of its body terminating in the vigorous tail of a fish. Redemption through death and resurrection. Life out of death. The fellowship of His suffering leading to the power of His resurrection.
6. AQUARIUS, the Water-bearer: the figure of a man with a large urn, the contents of which he is in the act of pouring out in a great stream from the sky. The Sent One who would pour out waters of blessing, the life of the Spirit on the earth in the former and latter rain. Rivers of Living Water from the innermost part of our being. The outflow of His life.
7- PISCES, the Fishes: the figures of two large fish in the act of swimming. Christ, Head and body, the two fish that would be multiplied, a symbol of God' s grace going out to all the world.
8. ARIES, the Ram or Lamb: the figure of a strong sheep, with powerful curved horns, lying down in easy composure, and looking out in conscious strength over the field around it. The Lamb in the midst of the throne; the nature of the Lamb perfected in the enChristed, overcoming all things.
9. TAURUS, the Bull: the figure of a powerful bull, in the attitude of rushing and pushing forward with great energy. Christ coming in judgment, as a refiner's fire. The righteous judgments of Cod committed to the saints of the Most High.
10. GEMINI, the Twins: two human figures closely united. The Son and the sons. The King of kings and Lord of lords. The lords of the Lord and the kings of the King. Christ reigning in and through His body.
11. CANCER, the Crab: the figure of a crab, in the act of taking and holding on with its strong pincer claws. The power of the Kingdom of God. The glory of being "in Christ." The little flock secure in Him attaining the goal of His fullness.
12. LEO, the Lion: the figure of a great rampant lion, leaping forth to rend, with his feet over the writhing body of Hydra, the Serpent, which is in the act of fleeing. The Lion of the tribe of Judah prevails. The Serpent defeated. Christ in us is Victor. The Serpent flees. The battle ends. Victory is secure!
On the other hand, here is the Bible warning about about this type of stellar worship:
"...and lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them..." Deut. 4:19.
Looking for His Appearing
The Royal Priesthood
Eby attempts to carry the OT priesthood in Israel to the current day church. This is classical Replacement Theology and incorrectly appropriates the program that God set up for Israel prior to the time of the Cross when Jesus Christ became our priest and mediator between man and God.
Eby inserts this new priesthood into the New Testament church in order to support the heretical MSOG theology of latter day apostles and prophets.
Here are a few statements from this series of writings.
"God has always wanted a priesthood. The priesthood is foundational to the outworking of His redemption and central to His plan of the ages. (Eby claims that) The covenant of God still stands today: "Now therefore, if ye will obey My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye(here God is referring to Israel) shall be A PECULIAR TREASURE UNTO ME ABOVE ALL PEOPLE: for all the earth is Mine: AND YE SHALL BE UNTO ME A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS, AND AN HOLY NATION."
Oh, beloved, come, let us now open our hearts wide to Him. Come, and as we gaze upon this glorious ministry and its life-flow to all the families of the earth, let us yield ourselves unto God that He may work His wondrous work in our lives, bringing us into such union with Jesus, the High Priest of our profession, that we become in nature and power His ROYAL PRIESTHOOD in the earth!
The manifestation of the Sons of God for which all creation is in travail(Jesus Christ will make all things new, not man, not the MSOG nor latter day apostles and prophets)is nothing more nor less than the full manifestation of God's fully developed and empowered body(this is not the Holy Spirit's scriptural function) of KING-PRIESTS AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHISEDEK. Those apprehended unto this ministry are indeed, A PEOPLE FOR A PURPOSE!
However, the Bible clearly admonishes Eby by saying that:
"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man, Christ Jesus". 1 Timothy 2:5.
Ashes of a Red Heifer
Eby mistakes the reason for the Red Heifer in OT history and misleads the reader from its intended purpose. Hebrews 9:13-14 clearly states the reason for the red heifer as regarding the pure life of Christ prior to His sacrifice on the cross. The Red Heifer was to be a symbol or precursor for these early Jews as to the nature of and need for a flawless and spotless Heifer as it symbolized that future sacrifice that Christ would make for all.
Eby does not understand the analogy or typology being portrayed in Old Testament rituals as they related to future, New Testament descriptions related to the sacrifice on the cross of the perfect Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. Dominionist/Charismatic movements have little or no need for these analogies since they collectively believe Israel as a nation has now been relegated to the wastebasket of history and has no future in the dispensational economies of the future.
The Lamb's Book of Life
Again, we see a subtle but clear denial of important portions of the Book of Revelation where the final judgement of (unsaved) mankind is conducted using "the books" and in particular "The Book of Life".
Eby again has to spiritualize a wide variety of verses throughout scripture to butcher the clear, literal translation and instead prop up the Manifest Sons of God theology where an "elect" set of matured, spiritually manifested individuals govern the earth.
"The Book of Life is that blessed company of the sons of God, elect, chosen and transformed into the image of Christ throughout the ages.
This Book is being carefully written word by word, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, page by page, and chapter by chapter in the nitty-gritty of our daily experience with God until the full revelation of the Christ shall be set forth therein."
Notice as well that Eby does not refer to Jesus Christ but to "the Christ", a manner well established by the New Age movement which bears more than a few similarities to the Charismatic movement.
Union by Fusion
Eby uses a smattering of science and lots of human reasoning to "re-create" the creation process and produce a "cloning process" for man which supports the MSOG theology, namely:
When the "Spirit of Holiness" is transmitted into our lives and consciousness we begin to function in our personality in that characteristic of God's holiness, thus becoming holy. When the "Spirit of Wisdom" is transmitted into our consciousness we cease from our own natural reasoning and commence to act in accordance with the higher wisdom of God. When the "Spirit of Life" permeates our being even our bodies shall be quickened by His life within until this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality.
Eby is claiming that all of these physical and spiritual attributes occur(for only an elect few) before Christ would return(actually, Eby does not believe in a second, physical coming of Jesus Christ - see "Looking for His Appearing", above).
This heretical MSOG theology is pure New Age mumbo jumbo and detracts from the perfection that we, the saved of all ages, will attain ONLY when All who are saved physically see Christ at his second return; and only then are we to be as He is, as 1 John 3:2 clearly states:
Beloved, now are we the children of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is.
The operative phrases are clearly: "when He shall appear" and (then) "we shall be like Him". Not before and not at some distant time beyond that appearance but WHEN HE SHALL APPEAR.
Eby and the MSOG crowd instead believe there will be a magical spiritual and physical morphing from our current, unclean and unsaved state, slowly to one of perfection and complete spiritual knowledge with defiance of sickness and even death, BEFORE CHRIST RETURNS. Furthermore, this change in spiritual and physical attributes is only for an ELECT few, those who are "manifested" as sons of God by this gradual, man-driven process.
Satan deceived Eve with the same words:
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods(or God), knowing good and evil. Genesis 3:5.
Now, instead of the apple from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil; man is being tempted by a satanic influence to accept a spiritual program which will yield the same results as that promised to Eve.
Eve knew the truth, but was deceived by an evil spirit(satan). Eby and the Charismatic MSOG and Latter Rain movements as well as the Kingdom Now/Dominionist movements have fallen for this same lie.
"...because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved...And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie. 2 Thes. 2: 10-11.
What is this delusion that Paul speaks of? During the Tribulation it will be the spiritual signs and wonders that the False Prophet performs on behalf of the Anti-Christ(which Eby also does not believe in) which then deceive the entire unsaved world.
Does "spiritual signs and wonders" sound familiar in today's Pentacostal and Charismatic movements? The deception of the False Prophet will clearly be a seamless transition from the apostate church's spirituality to the signs and wonders of the Tribulation period.
The Apostle Paul also knew from the Old Testament(1 Kings 22:22) that God sent forth a lying spirit to deceive Ahab, the wicked King of Israel, who rejected the truth, so that he would go up to be slain at Ramothgilead.
"...and there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said, I will persuade him(Ahab). And the Lord said unto him(the spirit), wherewith(by what means)? And he(the spirit) said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his (Ahab's) prophets(or advisors). And He(the Lord) said, Thou shall persuade him, and prevail also; go forth. and do so." 1 Kings 22:22
Eve, Ahab, Eby and all of mankind are given an opportunity to accept the truth at some point or in some manner or form during their life here on earth. Otherwise, when Judgement is pronounced at the Day of the Lord, no evidence of acceptance or rejection of such truth can be presented.
God, being righteous, is unwilling that any should perish and so presents each man and woman, regardless of their station or position in life, an opportunity to accept or reject this truth. As humans, it is difficult for us to imagine how all of this is possible but God is the righteous judge and, as noted above, unwilling that any should perish(or reject the truth) and thus will arrange for these conditions for acceptance or rejection of the truth.
Rejecting such truth when it is presented(perhaps even more than once), they now could be sent the strong delusion or lying spirit to persuade them that there is another theological "truth" that they should follow instead.
The lie that satan presented to Eve is the same one being offered by a "lying spirit" to those that reject the truth and instead now follow a lie that will lead to their condemnation and eventual destruction at the Great White Throne Judgement.
1 Tim. 4:1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,
This gradual, deification of man appeals to the ego and to the mind of the unregenerated. Eby subscribes lock, stock and barrell to this heretical theology as is evidenced in this and the other "writings" listed on this page.
Savior of the World Series
Echoes from Eden
Various Other Writings
Covers a wide range of practices currently promoted within certain renewal and revival movements. It is claimed that when a person is touched or influenced by the Holy Spirit, he or she will "manifest" - respond in a physical way.
This can include: falling to the floor (so-called "carpet-time"), "holy laughter", producing animal noises (i.e. roar like a lion, cluck like a chicken, bark like a dog, etc.), uttering "warrior or war cries," wielding imaginary, "Golden Swords," doubling-over as if punched in the stomach (referred to as "doing crunches"), "birthing" (squatting on the floor and pretending to "give birth"), acting drunk, etcetera.
Should Christians be barking like dogs and oinking like pigs? Should a woman be laughing so hard she's rolling around on the floor with her skirt above her head? Should a man be so "drunk" in church that he's laying on the lap of a woman who is not his wife?
Is the term "Holy Ghost glue" in the Bible? How about "Holy Ghost bartender"? Should we listen to a preacher who makes a prophecy and it comes out wrong? Read Deuteronomy 18:22 for the answer.
Should kids have to be sent home from school because they can't stop "jerking"?
God is not the author of confusion and these things are certainly confusion.
Despite claims to the contrary, manifestations are often seen by those who promote them as indications of a person's spirituality. Those who do not manifest are sometimes said to be "HTR" - Hard To Receive (i.e. it is said they do not easily accept or receive what God has for them.)
Some people fake manifestations, either in an effort to appear "more spiritual" or to try and work something up.
Critics like Hank Hanegraaff claim manifestations are the result of mass-hypnosis, while Christian psychiatrist John White indicates some manifestations occur as "learned pattern[s] of behavior". Hanegraaff, the controversial president of the Christian Research Institute, is noted for his unbalanced criticism of the Toronto Blessing.
John White, however, is generally sympathic to the Vineyard movement from which the Toronto Blessing evolved. While the Vineyard ousted what is now the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship over disagreements regarding, among other things, the way manifestations were handled, the movement itself is known for its emphasis on experience over doctrine.
White's book, "When The Spirit Comes With Power," was written before the Toronto Blessing Movement emerged. But he does address some of the manifestations (laughing, shaking, etcetera) that were taking place in the Vineyard Movement.
Long-time observers of the Vineyard-, Toronto Blessing-, and Pensacola Outpouring movements agree that manifestations occur as learned patterns of behavior. People copy each other, with visitors taking the manifestations back to their own churches.
Manifestations often start or increase at the mention of certain trigger words or phrases. They also occur seemingly spontaneously. However, the published of Apologetics Index has interviewed numerous people who, after leaving certain movements, admitted to faking manifestations for a variety of reasons - including a desire to appear spiritual, receive a blessing, "experience God," "stand up against the enemy," "receive healing," etcetera.
Many of those who manifest assign spiritual significance to various manifestations. For example, those who squat on the floor, going through the motions of apparent child birth (a manifestation occurring in men and women alike), claim that "God is birthing something" in the spiritual world.
Some see such manifestations as prophetics, while others believe they are actively participating in the creative process. Those who manifest by shouting "ughh!" while acting as if they were just hit hard in the solar plexus often claim they feel (evil) spirits leave their bodies.
Less obvious manifestations also have meanings assigned to them (e.g. roaring = anointing for prophecy), though these explanations tend to vary from church to church and movement to movement.
Generally, those who manifest claim to feel spiritually refreshed after they have manifested, and see this as confirmation that manifestations are inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Others point out that spiritual refreshment can be had without the aid of manifestations. Some suggest manifestations are as addictive - and as dangerous - as drugs, noting that many proponents have a tendency to gravitate toward increasingly bizarre manifestations.
Apologetists and other religion professionals familiar with Eastern occult religions bring up additional, serious concerns, comparing the manifestations of the Toronto Blessing and related movements with similar manifestations in Kundalini Yoga .
A sad quote and I'll leave this subject alone. This passage is taken from "Counterfeit Revival" by Hank Hanegraff on page 87:
"One night I was preaching on hell," boasts Counterfeit Revival leader Rodney Howard-Browne, when suddenly laughter "just hit the whole place. The more I told people what hell was like, the more they laughed."
I'm sorry but hell is no laughing matter. If anything it should drive men to repentance and those of us who are saved should be thinking "Thank you Jesus I'm not going there."
We certainly shouldn't be laughing because it is a real place and people we know are going there.
The Spirit of Christ would not make us laugh.
For a sobering review of why these types of manifestations do not represent the actions of Jesus Christ and his disciples during their earthly ministries, and therefore should not be a part of Christian churches today, go HERE.
1 Tim. 4:1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.
